Water usage should be fairly consistent all year. Filling a swimming pool for the Summer, frequent watering of your lawn or washing vehicles at home, can cause an increase to your water bill. A sudden unexplained increase in water usage, may be the results of a leak. Toilet leaks are very common and hard to catch until you have already received a high water bill.
Please be aware toilet leaks can be from any of the following: a bad flapper valve, the flapper valve seat, the float arm and/or the overflow tube or the ballcock valve. To determine if your tank is leaking, you may use a dye test. A dye test can be done by placing a dye tablet or dropping (3 drops) food coloring into your tank. Wait a few minutes and if you see the colors appear in the toilet bowl(s), you have a toilet leak, and may need to contact a licensed plumber to remedy the problem(s).
Unfortunately, no. The city currently has no program in place to cover unexpected water usage. You may be eligible, however, to request a payment plan. For details, contact Utility Billing at (903) 356-3306.
