Halloween Safety Tips

Children's safety is always a main concern, especially when they are trick-or-treating at night.  Teach your children to recognize the places along his/her route where they can obtain help: Police Station, Fire Station or any other well indicated public place.  The Quinlan Police Department shares their tips for keeping your kids safe this Halloween...

Trick-or-Treating Safety

  • Children should always walk on sidewalks and never cut across yards or driveways
  • Avoid trick-or-treating alone.  Travel in a group with a trusted adult
  • Parents/guardians it is important to be aware of the route that their children plan to follow.  Ensure your child is wearing a watch or has a cell phone, also allows you to establish an agreed upon curfew
  • Trick-or-treaters should only approach houses that are well lit
  • Both parents and children should carry flashlights to see and be seen

Costume Safety

  • Halloween costumes should be light and bright, so children are visible to mototists and other pedestrians.  Add reflective tape to your kids trick-or treat bag and or add arm bands to heighten their visibility
  • Costumes should fit properly, if the costume is too long-it may cause kids to trip and fall
  • Select a costume that is constructed from flame-retardant materials
  • Make sure your vision is not restricted.  Masks may require that the eye-holes be cut larger for the sake of good peripheral vision
  • Shoes should fit properly, even if they do not go well a costume
